This novel, written by my grandfather Duff Cooper, is based on the famous Operation Mincemeat. It’s not the story of the actual man, but of who he might have been. It is one of the most heartbreakingly wonderful love stories I’ve ever read.

My grandfather was an advisor to Churchill and knew about the operation as it happened. It was of course Top Secret—and this novel was the first hint that the general public heard of this daring escapade.

It’s a bittersweet love story of lost chances, desperate hopes, and bad yet perfect timing, in which one man’s supreme sacrifice helps turn the course of World War II.
